I was at a meeting today of the Northern Virginia G.K. Chesterton Society and one of the conversations that cropped up was how different things are from when we were children. When we were children we were free to do things like pick up sports and play with knives and chemistry sets with real chemicals, and we built model airplanes pretty much from scratch, just lines printed on the balsa wood that we had to cut out with razor blade knives, and little electronic kits which could make radios and other interesting devices. Today that world has been destroyed and children are brought up to be controlled in everything. Initiative is squashed early. They dance to the adult drummers and are made to be afraid of disobeying the insane rules. They can't carry Boy Scout knives like I did from the 3rd grade on. Their lives are minimize, marginalized, reduced to following rules and constraints that bind them and result in stunted lives. Once the conversation started everyone had stories to tell.It is time to restore personal responsibility to center stage and stop pretending that the nanny state has to be there to control our lives or we're all in danger. The danger is from the nanny state. PRESCIENT WILLIAMSON
