SEE HERE  I don't know why education is such a big deal except that getting the government involved in almost anything is a way to make it inferior.  Education requires hard work if you're to benefit as you should.  You don't just open the little skulls and pour the education in.  There is a lot of confusion about education as if teachers educate when the fact of the matter it is always the student educating themselves with the teacher as a guide to make the process easier.  Without student cooperation education is impossible.  We have built a system that is mindlessly out of control from the point of view of behavior.  No one can learn in an undisciplined environment and no one can learn when disrespect and bad behavior or the order of the day.  I don't hold out much hope so long as teachers have their hands tied and parents fail to acknowledge their own responsibility in bringing of their children to be citizens and not merely little barbarians.

When I was in the military in basic training the company I was in ran out of mops for the cafeteria so the sergeant had some KPs (troops on kitchen police duty) go down to the next company down the street and steal some of their mops. 95% of Climate Models Are Wrong

SEE HERE  This is amusing.  The next time someone says 97% of climate scientists agree you might want to point out, "Agree with what?"  Because 95% of the climate models significantly overstate warming and are therefore wrong as is worthless because they don't do what they are purported to do, i.e. predict the warming trends.  So if the models don't work and the data actually disagrees with experience then exactly what is it that the 97% are in agreement about?  Oh yeah, that they want to keep getting the lucrative grants so they can continue their "research".  Their research is making wrong climate models.  Hmmm.... do you detect just a faint odor of self-interest there?

I probably should put it in Spitzenpopper but since it has such political possibilities I'll put it here.  A friend sent me the link HERE which referenced the site and also a new internet tool called IFTTT which stands for "If This Then That" and it lets you set up triggers that detect certain things and trigger actions like sending an email.  Examples: Weather Alert? Send me an email about it.  House of Representative Passes A Bill? or Votes? Send Me The Details ... that kind of thing.  It is a techie kind of thing but it's got all sorts of potential.

Racism Is A Black Problem All Right — They Need To Clean Up Their Own House First

All this finger pointing about racism ignores the fact that the most racist folks are the black folks.  They're the ones attacking white folks with knock out games.  They're the ones who are intolerant because, get this, a grocery store moving into the neighborhood would increase the value of the neighborhood and attract white folks.  It's crazy really.  The whole idea that racist white America elected a black president but they're all racists while the black Americans generate the vast majority of the racist speech while screaming about racism.  Somehow I can't help but think that our society is very sick.

The technology capable of significant stimulation of such an event should be detectable, localizable, and counterable. Is the FEMA acquisition of emergency clothing related? Seems problematical.

Or on the other hand is it just a MALFUNCTION? Right now I'd bet on the malfunction idea since the energy required to seriously stimulate the volcano is quite large and it's hard to imagine how it would be accomplished.

DOW Breaks 200 Day Moving Average

SEE HERE  There are two major schools of investment strategy: 1) the Fundamentalists who evaluate stocks based on fundamentals like earnings, capitalization, cash flow, and the like, and 2) the Technical Analysts who depend on the theory that the market is efficient and so all the information is already in the prices and volume of trades on the market.  MORE

One technical factor is the idea that stocks trade in market trends depending in part on the enthusiasm the investors have for the market.  This gets reflected in the ideas of Bull and Bear markets.  The Bulls are those optimistic about the market and the Bears are those who are pessimistic about the market.  The market tends to trade in trends depending on the relative number of bulls and bears in the market.  Upward trends are bull markets while downward trends are bear markets.

Stocks commonly trade above or below the general trend.  When they rise more than expected or fall more than expected the Technical Analysts see this as signaling a change in trend.  We've been in a bullish phase for a while which is hard to justify on the basis of the wildly out of control monetary policy that is expanding debt and credit.  So this Bear signal breaking the 200 day trend on the downside may signal a market top.  Of course as with all such 'signals' their meaningfulness will tend to depend on the opinions of investors. 

So is the end approaching.  Here's on analyst who says YES while my Schwab report that came in today was talking about "deflation" but using what I sense in a naive definition of deflation.  They're starting to call downward markets "deflation" since afterall you money buys more when the market goes down.  The problem with that idea is that there are lots of reasons for markets to go down beside the rather odd idea that the money is getting to be worth more.  My visits to the Super Market have not been showing bacon going down.

Why Work When Government Welfare Pays More?

SEE HERE  This is the dilemma of solving the poverty problem by giving away free money.  It subsidizes not-working and disincentivizes the people receiving the freebies so that not-working becomes more appealing than working.  This of course is a recipe for a permanent "down-trodden" (not sure that voluntarily sucking up free bucks qualifies actually as downtrodden) class and tends at the margin to incentivize more folks to leave the workforce.  In short it is a socially destructive policy.  Of course it does produce a large cadre of grateful voters who like their free perks and are in the bag for the Democrats.  After a while that's what it looks like — tax money for votes.  It's working but of course long term it has the problem Margaret Thatcher pointed out when she said "Socialism works great until you run out of other people's money."

And You Thought School Was About Education

SEE HERE  Behavioral modification and spying on parent seems to be more the order of the day at some public schools these days.  They would not have time for this nonsense if they were actually educating the students.  Our schools are simply a national catastrophe.  They have received so many contradictory and expansive direction to create little automatons suitably brainwashed that they have no time any more for the three R's and it shows in how poorly they perform.  As a retired college professor who taught some first year freshman courses I can say that only about ten percents of the students that came into my classroom were as proficient as they should have been after K-12 education and at least 30% functioned on what was a pretty marginal level, unable to read proficiently or write grammatically, unable to take notes effectively because they can't write cursive or in many cases even print legibly, and mathematics, well that's often interpreted apparently as using a calculator which is a sad commentary on our schools.

They don't have anyone to blame but themselves, but the decline has been catastrophic.  The story of Detroit needs to become the cautionary tale of how not to run a large industry and a industrial city.

The Failure Of The Schools Is Worse Than You Thought

SEE HERE So the problem is even worse than we thought.   If you have children in public schools you should be very vigilant.  What are they being taught?  Is it accurate?  Are they being taught to think or merely regurgitate the propaganda they are being fed?  Modern education is a morass of  trendy things that education establishment wants your kids to think and not what you may remember.  History is not taught instead it is distorted to achieve the political ends of the establishment.  Students commonly read well behind grade level, don't know how to do basic arithmetic with any facility, are not exposed to standards of civility or proper speech, can't write cursive or write at all with any particular literacy, and the deficiencies go on and on.  The schools need to be fixed and the first fix is to get the government and the one-size-fits-all mentality out of it.

Ayers Versus D'Souza Rhetoric Versu Logic

This was an excellent event at Dartmouth.  It's worth a watch just to get the sense of the difference between rhetoric and logic.  I think D'Souza won it hands down, but I also think that Ayers comported himself well.  He did what leftists do which is go to the extreme and label everything in exaggerated terms and act as if they are the only sensitive, compassionate people in the universe.  D'Souza handled it pretty well and that's high praise because it is tricky to handle that strategy without sounding unsympathetic.  D'Souza, because of his Indian background, had examples from his own life to draw from which dulled some of Ayers' rhetoric.
