I Remember! — When We Were Free

SEE HERE I remember when we were free to rake our leaves to the street and burn them there.  I did that in Falls Church, Virginia every Fall while I was in high school.  I remember when everyone celebrated July 4th with fire crackers and cherry bombs and sure some M80s, pin-wheels, and colorful fountains of sparks and we'd go off to big fire works displays after a big picnic.  Now it's too dangerous because we have all been turned into wimps.

I remember when most boys carried pocket knives and played mumbly-peg at recess at school.  Now, horrors, knives are forbidden.  We mostly had .22 rifles too.   I remember when all high schools had rifle teams and the girls were often the best shots.  One of my girl friends had the awesome picture of herself in the prone position with a big-ole bull .22 rifle. She was a crack shot.

I remember when the only health insurance you had was catastrophic health insurance and doctors made house calls and some had little pharmacies in their offices where they dispensed medication all wrapped into the cost of the office visit.  I remember when government had not grown to take over every aspect of your life and tell you what to do.  I remember when I was a lot freer and didn't have to watch my back because some bureaucrat wouldn't approve.  I think it is time to turn back the clock before we've lost all our freedom.
