A Sobering Assessment of Energy Alternatives

SEE HERE I have a lot of respect for John Stossel. I think he's a straight shooter and when he says something I believe that at least he believes it. That being said this is an important read since it does call into question most of the mantras both left and right are chanting about energy. It's interesting that it takes on nuclear power on the grounds of expense and most of the other energy sources on the basis of inefficiency. This of course means not that there are no energy solutions, but that none of the energy solutions are silver bullets. Long term energy is a significant issue and all the talk about wind, solar, and nuclear may just be so much hot air.

SEE HERE I don't know much about this guy Lovelock who apparently came up with the Gaia idea. I don't think the planet is sentient and I don't believe in Gaia, but it is interesting to listen to this guy, just take him with a huge grain of salt. It isn't science. It isn't religion. It's some strange sort of mixture of the two. Some of his advice is interesting. Notice that he doesn't do scientist things like present data or analyze data or discuss data. Instead he seems to be reacting to a belief system that he's internalized which seems likely to supersede data.

An Eyewitness Account from a Tea Party Person Who Was Up Close and Personal

What's the deal? I think it is that Congressmen on the Left think it is all about them and they're delusional. (The following is a personal eye witness account from a friend of a friend who was there)

Last Saturday we stood on the steps of the House office building, demonstrating against the government take over of our health care. We were a pretty intimidating group, 64 year old me with the surgery wound on my neck still showing, my threatening gray haired bride, and our secret weapon, an 80 year old school teacher. Yes, you had to be very brave to face the likes of us. A few Congressmen and women did. They were are greeted with “kill the bill.” The Congressmen would smile, give a thumbs-up and we would cheer.

Then several Congressmen, staffers, and a Capitol police woman came from the Capitol headed up our steps. A Congressman is a Congressman, so we started chanting, “kill the bill, kill the bill” (our throats are too old to keep up a continuous chant). No thumbs up, so we chant louder. Then one goes over to say something to a demonstrator on the side of the steps. The Capitol police woman looks confused. It is too noisy to carry on a conversation. The Congressman turns around and goes in. Everyone stops chanting (save your throats, it will be long day). Then the Congressman comes back out with a Capitol policeman (the police woman was not big enough?). The Congressman meanders around as we start up another “kill the bill chant”. Simple message, I am a simple person.

That night I hear that some member of the Black Congressional Caucus claims to have been called the “N word” and spit on. Seems it was the wandering Congressman that we encountered on the steps. Now, I was on the steps, and I cannot say that anyone called him a NAZI, nitwit, numskull, or any other word starting with “n” (narcissist?). Partly because it was so loud you could only hear “kill the bill”. And spit-on, there were Capitol police with big black guns (some even those fully automatic assault rifles that people cannot be trusted with) all over. Any assault, and spitting is a form of assault (I think-but I am no lawyer), would have been addressed by the watching police.

So, what am I to think of a Congressman who says that which did not happen, happened? I have two choices, he is delusional, imagining events that occur only in his dreams. Or, he is a liar. You pick which is worse, I can’t decide.

Maybe we could go back to sanity, although as long as Obama is president and the Demon-crats are in charge that seems unlikely. If you've done something unpopular condemn your opposition as Neanderthals and suggest you're in fear for your lives because you did the right and heroic thing. It's odd that only Demon-crats ever seem to play this card, but they do it regularly. Someone needs to keep records so we can play the smallest violin in the world's rendition of "My Heart Bleeds for You" when they trot this claim out. Let's see the evidence that it's real. So far I've seen nothing but exaggerations and I'm reminded of the boy who cried wolf.

Michael Voris is an orthodox Catholic spokesman who is challenging the Catholic Church's hierarchy in America for their failure of leadership such that over a hundred Catholic congressmen and women could vote for a fundamentally immoral law. Catholic or not, listen to Michael Voris. He's a voice of reason, a prophet calling us to a restoration of moral awareness and good moral formation. One of the images of Christ is that of the phoenix, rising again. Will He find faith upon the earth when He returns? It's a good question and one that our politicians seem determined to make come up a resounding "No."

If You Only Knew How Much You Were Really Being Taxed

SEE HERE There would be a revolution if Americans fully comprehended how much they are really taxed. All they see is the withholding bill, not all the hidden taxes imposed by regulations, unfunded entitlements that expand state taxes, the reports and constraints on the market that make everything cost more than it should and the costs companies have to pass on to their consumers in the form of higher prices so they can pay for the overhead that government creates. Well enter VAT. If you don't know what VAT is that isn't too surprising. It's a Value Added Tax imposed at every step of a good's manufacture and it is a hidden tax. It is part of the reason we are competitive relative to Europe because they have it and we don't. Worse it is a hidden tax because you don't see it. It's paid by manufacturers just as you don't really see the corporate taxes that government imposes on business because they are passed on to you in prices that companies have to charge to recover the costs imposed by government. Part of the problem is that Americans are probably the worst educated people on the planet when it comes to economics. Too bad. What you don't know doesn't not hurt you, it cripples you because since you don't know it, you can't combat it. Welcome to ever bigger government suckers. We need to do something about this, but if you're a happy camper, thinking the nanny welfare state gives a damn about you, then you're unlikely to even notice when you're getting shafted.

But most people are working too hard supporting their families to notice that they are being gulled, lied to, and slowly enslaved. Freedom of Speech

SEE HERE The on-going nonsense about "hate speech" ought to be reined in and pulled up short by the reality that one man's "hate speech" is another's principled speech. Hate speech is one of those incoherent categories that is easily distorted and abused. The party in power may at first only define it is fairly reasonable ways, but even here what is to be made of righteous anger. Would we arrest Jesus for his treatment of the money changers? Probably. He certainly inflamed the hatred of the money changers. Speech is the making of sounds in the air. These sounds have meaning certainly and they can be used to incite people to many things. "Give me liberty or give me death" incited a colony to revolt. I think the British likely thought it "hate speech." Free men are allowed to speech even things that others may see as hateful.

The Decline of Civility

This incident at UW-Milwaukee stimulates a big discussion on RATE YOUR STUDENTS as to whether this is racism or not. My own view is that it is the result of the decline in respect for individuals in our society regardless of race, partly due to the extreme egalitarianism of the left and the decline of public manners. During this whole thing the student videoing the thing is just kicking back and eating something in class. And we wonder why students are not learning as much as they should.

The Main Stream Media is CORRUPT

SEE HERE You probably all heard the stories about black congressmen being treated badly by the Tea Party protesters in Washington. It was a fabrication of the people who are supposed to bring us the news. The number of cameras running makes it clear that they were hoping for something to develop (after all when their people protest they do the kind of thing that Ann Coulter was subjected to up in Canada) instead the Tea Party people are courteous and polite, because they are real Americans not phony stooges. It's Time To Do Something Else

SEE HERE I am not one of George Will's biggest fans. No particular reason except that I don't agree with him all the time and sometimes he comes across to me as supercilious. (does that mean super-silly? hmmm...) But in this piece he nails it and gives the underlying structure really of how government has destroyed opportunity for millions of lower-income people over the years. Destroying the family has been an unintended side effect of many government programs and the result has been a huge rise in single motherhood and children born outside of a stable family environment. This is the biggest single reason why so many of these unfortunate children have not succeeded up to their innate potential. Harried and harassed single mothers, themselves trapped by a system that discourages families if you want to receive your "checks" and the surrounding environment that results. More of the same, which is all government ever offers will deliver more of the same. Sorry government, you're not the solution to everything. Sometimes actually having a family, even a poor family, trumps government largess extorted from some to grow the power of others with a pittance stripped off to keep a constituency in dependency. The war on poverty looks more and more like a travesty. It has not decreased the number of poor, but it has made their poverty hell on earth. It's time to do something else.

What Part of "NO" Don't They Understand

CHECK IT OUT The web site that is linked has a bunch of pictures from the Washington DC turnout yesterday to protest the coming vote to take over the healthcare system of the United State, an unconstitutional and undesired move by a runaway and out of control congress that imagines they are our masters and not our servants. After months of watching them ignore Town Hall meetings, vilify their opposition, ignore helpful and much more success oriented approaches that actually take the interests of Americans into account and not just government bureaucracy we have come to this juncture. Today we will find out how many "representatives" have the courage to say "No" to what is a total violation of the oath they have taken to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America. Instead they want to impose cradle to grave mandated nanny-care administered by distant and faceless bureaucrats and paid for no-one really knows how since they are already in debt up to their ears to the Chinese and anyone else stupid enough to buy treasury bills. How will it all play out? We have a lot of historical precedents and I know of none that end in a good place. We stand up and say "No" now, or our children will have to fight to restore the freedom that their parents and grandparents had.

The New Deal was still reasonably "new" although whether it was a "deal" or not is still playing out. I'm inclined to think that it was a very big mistake that accelerated us down the road to our present crisis. If we are to remain a free people we cannot turn everything over to government and healthcare is too big, too personal, too life and death oriented to become a government fiefdom if we treasure our liberty at all. It is disturbing to see all the lying that is going on. This is the biggest power grab in history and they claim it will add millions to the healthcare rolls and save billions of dollars. "Hello, are you awake." How can you add millions to the rolls and save money at the same time? Economies of scale? Government. Post Office. Amtrack. Medicare. Social Security. When has that ever worked? Their lips are moving, they're lying.

SEE HERE Princeton physicists are generally the gold-standard of physicists along with a few other institutions. So I think this is worth thinking about. Health Care Plan: Try the Free Market and Get Government Out of the Business

SEE HERE (I know I ran this a couple of posts back but it came into my mailbox again and was just as good the second time around.) Let's cut straight to the chase, short and simple. Government caused the healthcare crisis in the first place. Government attempts to solve it will only make it worse. This is what I call the Government Two Step: Step 1: Screw something up legislatively, then blame the resulting chaos on anyone you can find, big business, greedy consumers, whatever and holler about how government needs to solve the problem, and Step 2: Step in and seize more power and more influence and mandate more nonsense which ends up making it even worse. Wait a while for the dust to settle and people to realize it is still screwed up and go to the blame game in Step 1 again and repeat. Sooner or later this will crush the country but the whole way down there will be finger pointing and blaming others and no solutions worth talking about in sight.

The solution? Stop the two step and let the common sense of ordinary Americans solve the problem. Works every time. I've never seen anything that government was incapable of screwing up more by fixing it than it was when they found it.

SEE HERE This is a classic situation of destabilization. As more and more people who have the franchise don't actually pay taxes to support the government but do receive benefits from the government then we're only a short step away from total fiscal irresponsibility and then we're only a short step away from collapse. Now I hate chicken little thinking. I don't think cap and trade will do anything but separate us from our money. Global warming is cause by the sun thank you very much and we better keep getting it. Government is the cause of most of our problems not the solution. ... But this is scary and I don't scare all that easy.

It might not be too bad if you could nail down those nasty billionaires and make them pay all the taxes (Oh yeah, they already do.) It might not be so bad if the people who make the money weren't able to move ... I mean like to Spain or Barbados or somewhere else ... It might not be so bad if taxes didn't kill the things taxed ... but all of those things don't work. So when the crunch comes the one sector that isn't going to crunch and isn't going to pay is that sector that can move. Then we can all sit around the fire and cook our boiled dogs and cats and sing "Kumbya".

Ethanol Fiasco ... Bad Fuel, Bad Use of Food

SEE HERE I can't think of anything good to say about Ethanol. It is expensive, inefficient, and environmentally unsound as a way of generating fuel, not only that but it increases the price of all foodstuffs that depend on corn. About the only good you can find to say about it is that the corn farmers like it since it helps them ramp up the demand for corn and so get higher prices. That's a poor excuse for a bad idea.

Now the first link debunks the whole story, but that's a kind of false lead because in fact given the mind set of the liberal and extreme left it is exactly to the extremes that they gravitate. So the right is merely being prescient rather than being wrong. I think it is exactly right to yell first and apologize later if it is warranted, which it won't be. The liberals are quite good at the "camel's nose in the tent" strategy or the warm frog strategy ... the word is out that real frogs actually jump out when it gets too hot, but it's still a good story.

Green Zone: A Movie That Creates the History the Hollywood Crowd Wishes Were True

This is a shallow if action packed movie that pretends that every liberal cliche about the Iraq war is true and serves up a simplistic tenacious view of the war, the WMD issue, and the notion that somehow the whole thing was just hoked up.

I was particularly offended by the quasi-military used to come in and take prisoners away from the regular military to be abused in separate interrogations. Never made clear who these folks were supposed to be. There is a distinct lack of motivation behind almost all the characters beyond a sort of paper cutout treatment.

Ultimately the movie is simply a propaganda piece. Save your money unless you just have to see how Hollywood messed up another war movie. There is a decided dearth of patriots in Hollywood. They've all been sold the liberal mantra that we're the great Satan. So maybe they should just immigrate to Iran or someplace that agrees with them and make their films there. Oh yeah! In those places their lifestyle would not be tolerated besides they'd have to pray bow to Mecca five times a day. Double whammy! Drat! It's always something...

The Tyranny of Small Things

SEE HERE Red State describes it as "the tyranny of small things" and it denotes the habit of politicians to poke their fingers into all sorts of matters that are outside the bounds of their proper concern and interfere. In this case it is common salt, which is I might add a necessary nutrient in peoples' diets although we tend to eat far more than we need. But that's a personal choice. One can go on quite far since this sort of thing has been going on for decades. I'd say seat belt laws, helmet laws, various laws about what fat can be used to fry things, the imposition of ethanol into gasoline (an expensive, corrosive, and ultimately inefficient and poorly motivated additive) and while we're going at it the removal of lead from gasoline which wasn't a problem and made the gasoline work better. (Lead is a soft and easily worked metal, but like most heavy metals tends to be toxic, although the toxicity is often exaggerated.)

Those who see danger in everything strive to remove all hazards from the world. But that is impossible since these things naturally exist regardless of human activity, so there are limits to the results we can achieve even if we think it is a goal worth achieving. Part of the problem is that our instruments have gone beyond our common sense. When you can measure parts per billion of a toxic element you create the perception in the minds of those who don't really understand numbers very well, that everything is poisonous and dangerous. That just isn't the case and is another one of those manufactured crisis opportunities that politicians seem to love.

Independent Review of Climate Science Funded by UN

SEE HERE AND HERE AND HERE Well I'd like to see an independent review, but I'm a bit skeptical about it. Picking the reviewers is already a "frocking" of the experts. I'd be almost more pleased by an out and out cat fight where one pits three groups the 1) believers, 2) the dissenters (disbelievers), and 3) the technically qualified but uncommitted. Then everyone can have a free-for-all. The rules of the game should include the provision that you have to present 1) your data, 2) your principles on which you analyzed your data, 3) your rationale that this is enough, and 4) your defense against what you think are strongest arguments of those that disagree. Then we might actually learn something. Right now I'd have to say that I'm on the fence. This sounds just like the beginning of a structural white wash job. HERE's THE RUN UP
