Throwing Mud Is So Much Easier Than Dealing With Issues

SEE HERE The state of modern politics is so pathetic that it's no wonder that we're on the skids.  It's no longer possible in the United States to have a campaign that centers on ideas and which ideas are better.  It is so much easier to attack your opponent either over very old news or if there isn't any very old news just make something up.  That's what we're seeing nowadays.  I suspect that to some extent it has always been this way.  Rhetoric wasn't invented yesterday and demonizing your opponent is a dishonest but often quite successful rhetorical tactic.  It is growing to be the only kind of argument that the left knows how to use and because it is effective the right is participating to an ever increasing degree.  When it is all over the only thing you know is that both sides are slimeballs.  Welcome to government by the best slimeball.  Now that is scary!
