SEE HERE Now Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) have been around for quite a while. They are among the more bizarre government meddlings in the health care market. You deduct a fixed amount from your salary to pay for health expenses and that is tax-sheltered money and then you spend it down on doctors visits, medicine and the like. I don't know if it still works this way, but if you didn't spend it all you lost what was left, at least you used to. So it was like medical roulette. Now they're playing games with the amount you can do this with.
If you were ever under the impression that the government cared about your health care then think again. They just play fast and loose with the rules moving the ball around in random and disorienting ways. Why not just make medical expenses 100% deductable and be done with it? If you're sick sucking up your income in income tax seems a bit macabre. But never you fear Uncle Sam is here to make sure you don't use your medical condition to exploit the system, really!
