The Truth About Proposition 8
SEE HERE I was having a dialogue on Facebook with a friend of mine on the whole notion of "gay marriage." We don't care what gay (isn't it odd that they hijacked that particular word) couples do so long as they don't rub our noses in their perversion. But calling it "marriage" is a travesty. Indeed, calling what the government does when it joins heterosexual couples together "marriage" is also a travesty. Marriage, properly understood, is a fundamentally religious thing even when no religion is involved. It is a covenant. It is a commitment to bring new life into the world. Lacking those two dimensions it isn't anything very special at all. It might as well be contractual copulation and it has become pretty much that in some areas like Hollywood. The government unions sanctioned by some sort of licensing shouldn't be called marriage at all if they don't have those two commitments. Government intrusion into this area changes the dynamic. We need a different word for whatever it is that government is up to. Maybe "Partnership" or something akin to that. Whatever the government is up to, it isn't marriage and gay cohabitation isn't marriage either.
